Arthur Alfred West was a professional
musician and was an excellent violinist. His wife, the
mother of eight children, was in poor health, so Arthur Alfred
decided to go to the National College of Chiropractic in Chicago. After
graduating he returned to Pocatello, a Doctor of Chiropractic
and started the West Chiropractic Clinic in 1916. It
was the beginning of the flu epidemic of World War I. The Spanish
Flu claimed the lives of 60 million people in a year.
His oldest son, Henry G. West, went on a Boy Scout camp out
on City Creek. He got the flu when he got wet during
a rain storm. He was bleeding from the lungs and was
so sick he didn’t care whether he lived or died. Dr.
West gave his son two chiropractic adjustments a day and
saved his life. As a result of this anecdotal experience
Henry G. West also went to the National College of Chiropractic
in Chicago. Henry G. West had a pre-med certificate from
the University of Utah and was planning to go to medical
school. Since chiropractic care saved his life, he
decided to go to Chiropractic College and follow in his father’s
foot steps. He joined his father in practice
in 1930. The office was on the second floor of Cook
Drug Store, now Maag Drug on West Center Street.

In 1941 the younger brother,
Arthur D. West, also a Doctor of Chiropractic joined the clinic. In
1948 the office moved to 241 South Arthur in Pocatello.
Henry G. West, Jr., was an
all-state quarterback with a full ride scholarship to Brigham
Young University to play football in Provo, Utah. He had
an accident in which he was thrown from a horse on a full gallop. After
landing on a hard pan road suffering a back injury, he could
not walk. After receiving expert care from his father,
Henry Jr. was playing football three days later. After
his football career at BYU and receiving a degree in pre-med
chemistry, minoring in microbiology, Henry G. West Jr., decided
to follow in the family tradition and went to the Western States
Chiropractic College in Portland, Oregon. He joined the
practice in 1961.
In 1970 the clinic was moved
to 1355 East Center in Pocatello.
The West family tradition continues
as the next generation, Jason D. West takes the reins of the family
practice. Following his undergraduate education with a degree
in microbiology from Utah State University, Jason West went to
the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic in Whittier, California. He
is a fourth generation of chiropractic physicians in the West family.
Over the years the clinic has
a number of associate doctors of chiropractic. Grant D. Finn,
a Doctor of Chiropractic, a graduate of the Los Angeles, College
of Chiropractic has been associated with the West Chiropractic
Clinic since 1986. As a result of growth and the need for a larger
facility the clinic has expanded to a new 5,000 square foot State
of the art medical office which includes smartly designed treatment
rooms, digital radiographic imaging, High Resolution Blood Morphology,
and a relaxing area designed for IV Nutritional therapy.
The new clinic is located at 1188 Call Creek Place near the I-15
Pocatello Creek Exit.
